Robben Island is a national and UNESCO World Heritage site off the coast of Cape Town. Now a symbol of the struggle for democracy in South Africa, between the 17th and 20th centuries, Robben Island was used as a prison, a colony for socially “undesirable” groups, and a military base. Remnants of its dark history include 17th-century quarries, the tomb of Muslim leader Hadije Kramat, who died in 1755, 19th-century 'village' buildings, including a church, parsonage, and small lighthouse, the lepers’ church and graveyard, World War II military structures, and the apartheid-era maximum security prison, which operated from 1961 to 1996.

Thousands of freedom fighters were imprisoned here by the South African apartheid government, most famously former president Nelson Mandela and Robert Sobukwe, leader of the Pan African Congress. 

Now a living museum, all tours of the island are conducted by former prisoners. It is one of South Africa's most visited sites, accessed by ferry from the Victoria & Albert Waterfront in Cape Town. The journey across Table Bay takes approximately 30-40 minutes and tours typically last 3.5 hours.

One of the oldest mountains on the planet, this natural world heritage site, and Natural New 7 Wonder of the World is the most iconic landmark of South Africa. Legend has it that the so-called “tablecloth” of clouds that pours over the side when a southeasterly wind blows up the mountain’s slopes is the result of a smoking contest between the devil and a retired sea captain named Jan van Hunks. More likely it's a matter of condensation, but the effect provides an awe-inspiring backdrop to the cosmopolitan city of Cape Town.

Flanked by Devil’s Peak and Lion’s Head, Table Mountain marks the northern end of the Cape Fold Mountain range, which runs like a spine from north to south through the Cape Peninsula. There are more than 2,200 species of plants and 1,470 floral species found on Table Mountain, many of which are endemic to the area, and form part of the Cape Floral Region, the richest yet smallest floral kingdom on earth.

A range of routes offer ways to explore the mountain, from walks around the Indigenous forest and lower peaks to rigorous hikes up, but the quickest way to the top is via the aerial tramway and takes about five minutes. Oudtshoorn is a town in the Western Cape province of South Africa, located in the Klein Karoo region. 

The town is known for its ostrich farming industry, and visitors can tour ostrich farms and learn about the history and process of ostrich farming. Oudtshoorn is also home to the Cango Caves, a series of limestone caves that are open for guided tours. The caves contain unique rock formations and are a popular tourist attraction.
